This guide explains how the tools work. This section explains why they are the way they are: what we measure and what we deliberately don’t, how we calculate, how comparisons can be made without anyone seeing your figures, and how we handle the impact of the platform itself.
You don’t need this to get started. But you will if you want to be able to explain where a figure comes from, or if you want to judge whether you agree with it.
What you will find here
- What a footprint is, and what it isn’t — the limits of what we measure, and why those limits exist.
- How we calculate — normalization, private space, renewable, scope 1 and 2, and the sources of our factors.
- Comparing without revealing your data — how the benchmark works and who sees what.
- A platform that takes its own footprint seriously — what we do ourselves to limit our impact.
If you think we’ve got something wrong, let us know in the forums. These choices were made by hosts, and they can be revised by hosts.
