Comparing requires data from others. This is only possible if everyone can count on their own figures not being traceable. That’s how it’s set up.
How the comparison group is formed
The group consists of published years from other accommodations, filtered for comparability, such as the same type of accommodation.
A minimum of three accommodations applies. If there are fewer, nothing is shown. With only two accommodations in a group, you could calculate the other person’s figures from the average and your own. For the report, the threshold is higher; if a year doesn’t reach it, previous years are included, going back up to three years.
Why percentiles and not a ranking
You don’t see that you are “seventh out of twelve,” but rather which part of the field you are in. A ranking would suggest there is a winner, and with small groups, it would become almost traceable.
Moreover, percentiles say something more meaningful: knowing you belong to the better half is more useful than knowing you are fifth among accommodations you don’t know.
Equally important: a percentile gives a range, not an exact position. We don’t pretend that two accommodations are comparable down to the decimal point, because no two buildings, seasons, or guest profiles are the same. What you get is a good indication of roughly where you stand, and that is exactly enough to know if there is room for improvement.
What anonymous means in practice
- Other operators never see your name, address, consumption, or occupancy.
- They only see group statistics, and only if the group is large enough.
- Conversely, you don’t see anything of theirs either.
Who sees what
| Who | What |
|---|---|
| You | All your own data |
| Who you invite | What you give them: read-only, or also edit |
| Other operators | Only anonymous group figures |
| Fair Hospitality | Your data, to make the platform work and to perform a check if you request one |
What happens to your Statbel files
These are stored with your accommodation so you can find them later and so the occupancy figures remain verifiable. They are only visible to you and the people you share them with.
Exporting or deleting your data
You can export your data, and you can ask to have it deleted. If you delete a published year, it also disappears from the benchmark group of others.
